Soffit and fascia replacement and fascia board repair in RI, MA and CT

Soffit and fascia replacement for homes in RI, MA and CT. We replace rotted wood, we never cover it up.

Do you need soffit and fascia replacement?

Soffit and fascia replacement is one of the most common calls we get in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. It rarely starts that way, though. The homeowner usually calls about a gutter that’s leaking or pulling away from the house. Then we get up the ladder and find the real problem: soft fascia, and soffit boards starting to rot.

Our trucks carry pre-primed fascia and soffit boards every day. That way we can cut out rotted wood and replace it on the same visit. In fact, we never wrap rotted wood in aluminum or vinyl and call it done. That hides the damage for a season or two, and then the board fails behind the new trim.

What soffit and fascia do, and why they rot

The fascia (plenty of people spell it “facia”) is the long board along the edge of your roof, right where the gutter attaches. The soffit is the panel under the roof overhang. It closes the gap between the fascia and the house wall, so rain and animals stay out of the attic.

Most rot starts with water getting behind the gutter. If a gutter has no flashing or a short drip edge, rain runs down its back and soaks the fascia. Ice dams also make it worse every winter in RI, MA and CT. Eventually the wood stays damp long enough to go soft. Trapped moisture can also cause attic mold. The EPA explains how in its guide to mold and moisture in the home.

Signs you need fascia board replacement

Signs that point to fascia board replacement:

One or two of these is enough reason to have someone take a look before the next storm season.

Fascia board repair vs. full soffit and fascia replacement

Of course, not every job needs new boards from end to end. Soffit and fascia repair works when the rot is limited to a short run. In that case we cut out the bad section, splice in new board and seal the joints. Full replacement makes more sense when rot shows up in several spots along the same wall. It’s also the better call when the rafter tails behind the fascia have rotted too.

In either case, we show you what we find before we start. If a repair will hold, we’ll tell you, and you won’t pay for boards you don’t need.

Our fascia board repair process

How we repair a fascia board, step by step:

  1. First we probe the fascia and the rafter tails behind it to find where the rot starts and stops.
  2. The gutter comes down so we can reach the board.
  3. Rotted fascia gets cut out, and any damaged rafter tails get repaired.
  4. New fascia board goes up in PVC or pre-primed wood.
  5. Fascia flashing goes under the drip edge and over the back of the gutter, with new drip edge where it’s needed.
  6. Then we rehang the gutter, or hang a new seamless gutter if the old one is worn out.
  7. Finally, we paint the new wood or wrap it in aluminum to match your trim.

Soffit repair and replacement

Soffit fails for the same reasons fascia does: water and time. Once a soffit sags or cracks, squirrels and bats find their way into the attic, and moisture gets trapped behind the boards.

Signs your soffit needs repair or replacement:

Often we replace just the damaged soffit panels. When the boards above have rotted too, we replace that section of soffit and fascia together so the new panels have something solid to hang from.

Vinyl soffit comes vented or solid. Vented soffit lets the attic breathe, which helps cut down on moisture and ice dams. We handle soffit installation in vented or solid vinyl to match your home.

Materials for fascia board installation and soffit replacement

Fascia and soffit materials we install:

Most homeowners go with PVC or wrapped fascia because they never want to paint that edge again. Still, wood makes sense on an older home where the new boards need to match the existing trim.

Gutter and fascia repair: how we keep new fascia from rotting

New boards only fix half the problem. If water keeps running behind the gutter, the new fascia will rot just like the old one did. So every soffit and fascia replacement we do includes flashing under the drip edge and over the back of the gutter. As a result, the water lands in the gutter instead of on the wood.

While the gutters are off, we also take care of the work that usually comes with them:

Common questions about soffit and fascia replacement

How much does soffit and fascia replacement cost?

It depends mostly on how many linear feet need new boards and how far the rot goes. The material matters too, since PVC costs more than wood. Rafter tail repair and taking gutters down also add to the price. We give you a free written estimate after we see the house. You’ll know the number before any work starts.

How long does fascia board replacement take?

Often just one visit, because we keep boards on the truck. However, a larger home, or a job with rafter tail repair, can take longer.

Can you replace fascia without taking the gutters down?

No, not if the fascia behind the gutter has rotted. First, the gutter has to come off so we can reach the board. Afterward we rehang it, or install a new seamless gutter if the old one is worn out.

Should I choose PVC or wood fascia?

PVC costs more up front, but it won’t rot and you’ll never paint it. Wood is cheaper and matches older trim, though it needs fresh paint every few years. We’re happy to price both so you can compare.

Can't you just wrap the rotted fascia in aluminum?

We won’t. Wrapping a rotted board traps the moisture and hides the damage. Meanwhile, the rot spreads into the rafter tails. We replace the bad wood first, then wrap or paint the new board.

Who replaces fascia boards?

A gutter company is usually the best call. The fascia holds your gutters, so both come off together during the job. Roofers and carpenters replace fascia too, but we replace the fascia board and then rehang your gutters, or put up new seamless ones, on the same visit.

Is fascia repair part of roof repair?

Not usually. The fascia sits at the roof edge, but you don’t need a roofer or a new roof to fix it. We work from the drip edge down. We replace the fascia, add flashing under the drip edge and put the gutters back.

Do you install aluminum fascia?

Yes. Our installers wrap new wood fascia in aluminum so you never have to paint it. If you’d rather skip wood altogether, we install PVC fascia board instead. What we won’t do is wrap aluminum over rotted wood.
